Beiersdorf is guided by the principle of recycling management. Both the use of natural resources and the generation of waste have significantly exceeded the limits of our planet in recent years. We therefore consider it as essential to think in terms of cycles and to ensure the recycling of materials.
Since a central topic in this context is the usage of plastics and plastic packaging, we are working intensively on innovative solutions to avoid, reduce, reuse and recycle our product packaging. One target in this area is our “Plastic Pledge”, which aims to compose 100% of our packaging refillable, reusable or recyclable by 2025, and to achieve a 30% recycled material content in our plastic packaging by 2025. However, “Fully Circular Resources” as a focus area does not only concentrate on packaging, but also includes the recyclability of our ingredients and formulations.

Our product packaging is also largely made of plastics. These have many advantages, but also one serious disadvantage: the amount of plastic now used worldwide has exceeded the planet’s capacities, especially in daily consumption. This is why, we at Beiersdorf are working intensively to optimize our four sustainability principles “avoid, reduce, reuse, and recycle”.

Waste

Our waste management contributes significantly to the reduction of our CO2 emissions. Our general principle is to avoid waste wherever possible and for those cases where we are not (yet) successful in doing so, we recycle it in the best possible way. We also try to avoid waste in the area of finished goods where we provide overstock of skin care products via a network of social partners to people in need. The same approach is true for food waste coming from the catering of our employees.

Life Cycle Analysis: How we make our products more sustainable

It is important to us to evaluate the environmental and social impact of our products. We do this via the holistic approach of Life Cycle Analysis (LCA). With LCA we screen the whole product life cycle starting from the cultivation and sourcing of the ingredients to the production and usage phase of our consumers. This allows us to identify among the many levers those that create a maximum impact towards a more sustainable product and hence, a decreased environmental footprint.
